TRUTH SERIES : NOT ALL SUPERHEREOS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE : INDIA

April 25, 2023

In the 6th segment of our TRUTH SERIES we will be hearing from numerous strong and resilient men and women who will each share their own powerful stories in tackling a life changing battle head on & their journey on how day to day life has been for them ever since. I pray this segment empowers many people who come across it and that it also gives strength & courage to those facing the same or a similar obstacle at present.

“My intentions for all various segments of the TRUTH series is to educate others who may not be aware of such issues, whether it’s because it has never been a challenge they themselves have faced, to educate those whom are aware but choose to ignore the issue/s and lastly to help encourage others in being brave in speaking out. As we know, knowledge is key.” – Natasha

I would like to introduce you to our 5th Special Guest for this segment, India. 25-year-old India who currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, was born with a condition known as Treacher Collins Syndrome. Today she is giving us an insight into her life by sharing some of her story below.

Hi! My name is India Walls, and I am here to share a bit about my story. I wanted to share my testimony because I know there are so many women out there who have been allowing society to define their beauty. I want to send encouragement to others that we are not defined by what others says about us, but our identity is found in Christ, and in God, what his Words says about us defines us. Life has definitely had its ups and downs. Growing up I never fully understood why I looked different from others. I used to tell myself, “I’m not normal.” I downgraded and criticized myself because of the comments that I would receive on a daily basis. There’s been bullying, laughters and cyberbullying constantly throughout middle school, passing on until my junior year of high school. I almost committed suicide at the age of 15, but somehow that thought went away. I just want to thank God for  that.

Speaking of bullying, I remember the time that my mother had put my sister and I, at this summer camp we would attend during the days while she worked. It was very saddening; the bullying had only gotten worse. Kids would throw balls at me, they would corner me and hit me, kicked me, whatever they wanted to do with me, until someone called on the teacher to make it stop. My sister was there but couldn’t physically defend me as there were about three other girls. I would always remember that day, because why didn’t I stand up for myself?

Treacher Collins Syndrome is a very rare condition. But surprisingly, I have met some beautiful people who also have the same condition as me. Treacher Collins is a genetic disorder that most often affects the cheek bones, jaw, chin, and ears. Symptoms include downward-slanting eyes, a very small jaw and chin, hearing loss, and vision loss. Some babies may be born with a hole in the roof of their mouth. Usually, there’s no cure for it, but it’s typically treated with correcting facial structure, and can involve plastic surgery, orthodontics, and dental care.

Back in middle school, my mother had asked me if I wanted to get surgery, at that time I was very insecure and I thought why not? My mother had surgery as a child, and I always wondered how she looked different than me, until she explained that she had surgery. But however, that plan never succeeded. As I got older, I decided to accept my appearance and be okay with who I am. I didn’t want to change myself for anyone’s approval or someone to like me. I never had friends, but I was okay with that.

In todays generation, you’ll come across nice people and mean people. I’ve experienced both, it hasn’t been a nice journey, although it had pushed me to my cores to where one day, I woke up and decided I wanted change. With change, it starts within me. It starts with changing my attitude and how I response to negativity. Being more loving towards myself and showing gratitude every day.

I am thankful for being made different because I knew I was meant to stand out, and not fit in. Needless to say, with being bullied in middle throughout high school — I came to my senses that it wasn’t me that was the problem. It was the people who projected their insecurities onto me that caused me to think I was unworthy. I am thankful every day of the wisdom, the understanding and discernment that God implemented in my life. I am thankful for allowing God to put me through this journey because without the circumstances that I had to face, I wouldn’t be where I am at. Confident, brave, and compassionate. I wanted to advise everyone, that it’s okay to be brave, it’s totally okay to stand out and show what you’re made of!

TRUTH SERIES : NOT ALL SUPERHEREOS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE : HANNAH

April 13, 2023

I would like to introduce you to our 4th Special Guest for this segment, Hannah. Hannah is a 20-year-old deaf and disabled Fashion Model who resides in Leeds, UK. Below is her story.

“Because of my disability and facial differences I’ve been deemed as evil whenever I would travel abroad as a child & a teenager. I have seen mothers hold their children tight and hurry them away from me, because they must have thought I was an evil being or they were scared of me. Getting normal work can be hard because not many seem to want to hire disabled people. I have forgiven the people who have said nasty stuff to me in the past, because no matter what a person says to me, I try to find the good in them and I try to educate them on a matter they don’t know nothing about. I’m also trying to help the world with equity and equality for everyone. I’ve learnt that retaliating to bullies & trolls feeds into their ignorant and degrading behaviour”. – Hannah

TRUTH SERIES : NOT ALL SUPERHEREOS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE : CAROLINA

March 25, 2023

I would like to introduce you to our 3rd special Guest for this segment, Carolina. Carolina is a 22-year-old Health Science student who resides in New Zealand. Carolina was born with a port-wine stain birthmark on the left side of her face and upper body. She also lives with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS) and Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS). Below is her powerful story.

My name is Carolina V. I live with a facial difference—a port-wine stain (PWS) birthmark on the left side of my face and upper body. The abbreviation PWS stands for the term "port-wine stain" (nevus flammeus or a fire-mark). In layman's terms, a PWS can simply be referred to as a birthmark. It is known as a capillary vascular malformation, which basically means the blood vessels beneath the skin (e.g., the lips) do not develop properly. It results in the vessels becoming enlarged, and this causes a visible discoloration on the skin's surface.

At birth, I had a light, red-looking birthmark. As I began to age, my birthmark darkened (dark red or reddish-purple) and also grew larger. To this day, it continues to grow. I was born with this on the left side of my face, shoulder, arm, hand, and chest. It extends to sections of the neck, back, and chest. It also appears inside the roof of my mouth (only on the left side), my lips, tongue, gums, and left cheek. It has not spread down to my lower abdomen, legs, or feet, though. My birthmark is associated with two disorders: Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS) and Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS).

KTS is defined as a rare condition that is discovered at birth. It causes blood capillaries or vessels, bones, and soft tissues to develop incorrectly. It is characterised by three main signs: the presence of a capillary vascular malformation (a PWS birthmark), malformations in lymphatic or vein development, i.e., varicose veins, and an overgrowth in bones and soft tissues. The affected limb may feel heavy, cause pain, and be difficult to move at times.

Similar to KTS, SWS is also a congenital disorder, meaning babies born with a birthmark on their face will most likely be born with this syndrome too. This neurological condition impacts the eyes, skin, and nervous system. Individuals may also experience seizures, developmental delays, and intellectual disabilities (all of which I have experienced).

Unfortunately for me, I live with both syndromes, both of which I have undergone medical treatment for. As early as 8 years old, I was granted the chance to have laser therapy performed on my PWS birthmark. Each surgery was performed under general anaesthesia (with inhalational gases) because I feared needles, especially while I was still awake. From my recollection, I had my first one at the age of 8 years old and my last one at 19 years old. I decided not to continue with the treatments anymore as they were causing me so much pain, both during and after them. I also did not want to commit to this for the rest of my adult life. Although it has lightened my birthmark a bit, I have accepted the fact that a birthmark as dark and as large as mine will never entirely fade.

I never had the opportunity to attend kindergarten or preschool. This would have been my first interaction with people who were not relatives of mine. Instead, I spent the first 4 years of my life at home and occasionally with close relatives, so I had no previous experience with school or forming meaningful interpersonal interactions and relationships. When I turned 5 years old, my parents enrolled me straight into a primary (elementary) school in our vicinity.

My parents did not want to leave me in the hands and care of complete strangers. As you can imagine, I only knew my parents, siblings, and close relatives because I saw them as familiar faces, so adding random strangers into the mix was bound to be a disaster. I would also be placed in a foreign environment with other children (younger and older than I) who have never been exposed to or met someone like me before. Because of my birthmark, this left me more susceptible to being bullied, alienated, and/or neglected.

As I reminisce on this specific event, I now understand why they decided to keep me home for the first 4 years of my life. On the positive side, they saved a lot of money, and I could basically do whatever I wanted without kindergarten teachers instructing me what to do. In my opinion, I did alright without attending kindergarten or preschool. I learned as I started school about forming meaningful relationships and having meaningful interactions with others. It did take me a few years to develop this life skill, though. I often find myself pondering what it would have been like for me if I had attended kindergarten and preschool.

Due to a lack of interpersonal relationships with other children, I mentally constructed walls around myself from a young age, much like our immune systems have three lines of defence. When it came to finding friends or acquaintances, I was quite selective. Some may even describe me as snobbish. However, that was my way of filtering out the fake friends from the true and genuine ones.

At an early age, my Mum taught me a valuable lesson about not feeling sorry for myself. She mentioned that it would lead me nowhere in life. I followed her advice and wasted no time in becoming mentally strong. When I was a child, there were rare occasions where I felt self-pity, but this wouldn't last long because I would remember her words. My Dad, however, educated me on similar values, such as remaining strong in the face of adversity. Alongside this, he would often remind me to work hard, if not harder, at everything I did. My parents are my role models, and I aspire to be more like them each day.

I encountered many strangers whom I have had the privilege of calling my friends. Some of them are still friends with me today. My friends have supported me by being present in my times of need, like when I was bullied. They also documented class notes on days when I was absent and never left me alone or rejected me. Every day, I am thankful to have such loving family members and friends who have accepted me for who I am.

I do not recall receiving online abuse, but I have received many negative comments in person, especially while I was still in school. I have been the victim of physical, verbal, and social bullying at the hands of my own classmates. It went on for a couple of months before my parents became involved.

In year 5 (fourth grade), I was bullied by four boys, whom I shall not name for obvious reasons. As with any clique, there’s always a ringleader or the main instigator who ignites the flame and commands the rest of its members to do something. In my case, that something was to cause me as much harm as possible with their comments and actions. One boy, whom I will refer to as Jackson, was relentless in his efforts to taunt me for several weeks, and this gradually progressed to months. He would do this whenever an opportunity presented itself. I tried so hard to avoid them, but it was hard because we were all in the same class.

As I have previously mentioned, my PWS birthmark spreads to the soft tissues in my lips. Due to this, it appears to be larger than normal. From a distance, some would confuse it as being my tongue, and this is what Jackson believed. Whenever I looked his way, sometimes directly at him, he would almost always say to me, "Why are you poking your tongue at me?" or "Stop poking your tongue at me." I could not help it, and I did not have the confidence to defend myself. I was defenceless, and the only thing I could do was cry. Several years after this incident occurred, I had lip and cheek reduction surgery to decrease its size. This surgery completely changed me for the better, and it certainly was a confidence booster.

I spent a large portion of my life being embarrassed by my PWS birthmark. I was also extremely self-conscious and fearful of what strangers would say about it. It worsened when I was among crowds of people, like in queues, but as early as 2019, I decided to embrace it. Just last year, I decided to start my own Instagram account (@facethecrowds) to raise awareness and educate people all over the world about this condition.

TRUTH SERIES : NOT ALL SUPERHEREOS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE : LEGEND

February 27, 2023

In the 6th segment of our TRUTH SERIES we will be hearing from numerous strong and resilient men and women who will each share their own powerful stories in tackling a life changing battle head on & their journey on how day to day life has been for them ever since. I pray this segment empowers many people who come across it and that it also gives strength & courage to those facing the same or a similar obstacle at present.

“My intentions for all various segments of the TRUTH Series is to educate & spread awareness to those who may not be aware of such social issues, illnesses or conditions that others around the world may face. To showcase the REAL heroes & role models in today’s society. By having their stories heard, I pray these segments help inspire and give strength & courage to others to also speak out. As we know, knowledge is key.” – Natasha

I would like to introduce you to our 1st special Guest for this segment, Legend. Legend is a 31-year-old Electrician who resides in New York, who had his life turned upside down after being hit by a subway train and nearly split in half. The incident resulted in his left leg being amputated with the need for over 20+ surgeries. Legend has still kept his same occupation as he had pre-incident, as for him it is important to still live the same quality of life. Legend believes that having kept his occupation is a constant reminder that he can do anything he puts his mind to and only limited by his imagination.  Below is his powerful story.

On May 29th 2019, my life was permanently changed… I was hit by a subway and nearly split in half. I lost my left leg, teeth, pints of blood and a lot of tissue in my back. I have so many scars all over my body and I am still experiencing some of the pain from that day.

I was in the hospital for two months experiencing excruciating pain physically and exhausted mentally. I have had over 20+ surgeries and was only able to eat three times a week. Imagine not being able to eat. Not even a drink of water, because every other day you are paralysed with pain, or in the operating room facing surgery that has a high risk of death.

I never thought I would be in such an intense accident. I never thought I would lose a limb. I never thought that I could die young, but the biggest shock to me was that I never thought I would STILL be myself, despite all odds. I don’t know where this strength comes from but I am so happy that I am here. A year later and I learned that I am stronger than I know or could imagine. Maybe, I have an unwavering spirit? Or resilience?

If I can overcome this, I think others can do the same wherever it applies in their life. Yes, certain parts of my life suck now, this isn’t a movie with a fairy-tale ending. However, many parts of my life are even more AMAZING now than before. I get to kiss and hug my loved ones, I put my creativity into new challenges daily to figure out how I can overcome any obstacle before me. I can’t dance anymore, well not like I used to, but I STILL get JIGGY with it and yall going to get this prosthetic two step.

BELIVE IN YOURSELF! When things suck or feel like it’s only getting worse, try your best to look at the positive. Each day above ground is an opportunity to start over. Progress will always take time, but perspective makes the journey worth it.

“I decided to share my story because I couldn’t find the answers I was looking for online. I didn’t know much about amputee’s or prosthetics and did some research, the common thing I saw in every video or article online is, an amputee 3 to 5 years in their process. They showed you post recovery and not pre-recovery/success. I wanted to know what the quality of life was like for an amputee from day one. How did you adjust? How did you adapt? What does that look like? What hurdles or challenges did you meet in real time? I couldn’t find these answers so I decided to make videos that showed my own journey step by step.

I have recorded my journey day by day for the first year and month by month for the second and third year. Many people reach out to me with tons of questions and I wanted a visual representation of that. This coming May will be my 4th year as an amputee and I want people to know, Happiness is a choice you make daily. The biggest thing I want people to know about me is that I believe in supporting others. Show up for people as best as you can; a little support goes a long way. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to nurture an adult and I want to be to others what my family is to me; NOURISHMENT.”  - LEGEND

TRUTH SERIES : MY MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY : MARCOS

August 25, 2020

Natasha Medlar presents the fifth of our TRUTH Series; the focus of the fifth segment being discussing Mental Health. In this segment we will hear from numerous diverse, empowering people who will each share their own personal stories on their journey in battling Mental Health. I pray this segment inspires and empowers many people whom come across it and that it also helps give strength to those facing the same or a similar obstacle at present.

I would like to introduce you to our 5th guest for this segment; Marcos. Marcos Ramirez is a New York based Photographer and Writer who found a way to cope with his anxieties through self-expression. Born in the Dominican Republic, he was influenced by Artists at a very young age and found a way to express himself through his photography and writing. Now, after his own battles with Mental Health, he is using his art to help and support others who might be going through the same things he once went through. Below is Marcos’ story.

On this journey we call life I’ve learned that no matter what obstacles we face, there is always a solution, that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

My name is Marcos Ramirez, and today I want to tell you that you matter, you’re important, you’re loved and you’re worthy. We might not know each other, but I wanted to say that because at one point in my life nobody said those words to me, I didn’t even know how important those few words were to me, and I really needed to hear them.

Over the past few years I’ve faced many obstacles regarding my mental health, things that at some point I thought were going to take me out. From panic attacks, anxiety, depression and me even wanting to take my own life. Life gets really dark when you start being afraid of your own self, of your own thoughts. I was used to being in control, and losing control of my thoughts and the way my body responded to certain things made me feel lost and angry. Angry at myself for losing control, angry at all the things and people that triggered those feelings, angry at life.

Seeking support from the people around me and from professionals was one of the tools that helped get my life back in balance. I’m an advocate for therapy at any moment of our life, whether we are going through something or not, therapy help us release, have open conversations and figure out situations in our life that by ourselves would become really complex.

Putting myself in places where I felt peace and joy also helped me a lot. Creating art, listening to my favorite music, writing poetry, all those things brought me a lot of joy and I make sure to do at least one of them every single day. When we do things that bring us joy, life just gets brighter, they are that silver lining we look for in moments of darkness.

If you like to write, I would recommend you get a journal, write down your thoughts, your ideas, and do your best to look at them in a positive light. Remember whatever situation you’re going through right now, most likely has a solution, even if that is just letting go of it and understanding it’s completely out of your control.

The truth is that there aren’t many things in this life that are completely under our control, life takes its course an we follow the path, so when you feel anxiety because you’re thinking too much about the future, just trust that life has something great for you, and that this is happening for a reason that you will later understand.

Trust yourself, and keep moving forward. Mental health is a journey, and finding balance happens one step at the time. You got this, I promise you, life will be okay, you will be okay.

I’m thinking of you, I’m praying for you, and I love you.

Peace.
